The Palliative Care Courtyard project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a meaningful cause. Thanks to the heartfelt support of Southern Ports, Kerman Charitable Foundation and many generous community donors through our 2024 Christmas Appeal, this project is set to transform the outdoor spaces for palliative care patients at St John of God Bunbury Hospital.

This project will bring beauty, comfort and calm, creating a sanctuary where patients and their loved ones can spend precious time together. Grenada, our 15-bed palliative care ward, is supported by a team of compassionate and dedicated caregivers who work tirelessly to bring comfort and dignity to every patient, and the adjoining courtyards hold great potential to become peaceful, restorative spaces that reflect the care within.

Palliative care is about more than medical treatment — it’s about dignity, compassion, and comfort. Creating spaces that reflect those values is vital for the wellbeing of patients and their families. Thanks to the care and generosity of every donor, these courtyards will soon be revitalised with vibrant potted plants, comfortable seating and soothing wall art. These enhancements will help create a more welcoming, restful space — one that promotes connection, reflection and peace during what can be an incredibly challenging time for individuals and families.

As Nurse Unit Manager Maeve shared:

“It’s a privilege to do what we do. Seeing a smile, hearing families laugh, or watching a fond memory being made — these moments matter and make a very difficult time for our patients and families easier,” she said.

“We want Grenada to feel as comfortable as possible for patients. The environment plays a part in that. Visitors and patients alike can feel awkward in a hospital setting. If we can bring patients outside — even those who are bedbound — to feel the fresh air and take in a beautiful space, what a difference it makes. You’re no longer in a hospital room. You’re just outside, having a chat or a quiet moment, taking it all in. It allows our patients and their families to cherish moments of time spent together at the end, in a space that does not have a medical feel.”

To everyone who helped make this possible — thank you for supporting a truly magical project.
